A real little paradise, Brittany has nothing to envy to the other regions of France. Between its beaches, its islands, its forests and... its cuisine, everyone dreams of one day setting foot in this magical place! Here is a taste of the specialities not to be missed during your stay in South Brittany in Finistere or Morbihan.
The Kouign-Amann
Originating from Douarnenez in Finistère and emblematic of Brittany, the Kouign-Amann is prepared from a bread dough covered with butter and sugar and then folded over several times. In 2018, it was included in the list of the 40 best recipes of all time in the American magazine "Food & Wine"!
Discover those of the Maison Ti-Forn in Audierne or those of the Boulangerie des Plomarc'h in Douarnenez.
Near Naéco Erdeven, come and discover the Kouign-Amann of the Boulangerie-Pâtisserie Robic in the heart of the village of Erdeven.
Galettes and crêpes
A great classic of Breton gastronomy, the galette (or crêpe) is made from buckwheat or wheat flour. Here, it is cooked on a billig, the traditional Breton crêpière. Available in sweet or savoury versions, the possibilities of fillings are endless!
Discover the creperie "Le Pied à Terre" in Clohars-Carnoët near our establishment in Le Pouldu and the creperie Aux Crêpes d'Or a few steps from our hostel in Audierne.
Chez Les Ganivelles in Morbihan: enjoy traditional galettes and sweet crêpes in a warm atmosphere, just a few minutes' walk from Naéco Erdeven.
The Breton cake
Simply composed of semi-salted butter, sugar, flour and egg yolk, the Breton cake is a cake with a sandy texture that reminds us of the Breton palet. Most often plain, it can also be filled with prune cream or salted butter caramel. Unique, this delicious cake makes everyone agree!
I hear that the ones from the Pains et fantaisies bakery in Clohars-Carnoët are delicious. Discover them during your stay in our hostel in Le Pouldu. Discover those of the crêperie pâtisserie Avel-Mor during your stay in Audierne or Kerjeanne - Atelier de Pâtisserie Bretonne in Belz, Morbihan, when you visit Naéco Erdeven.
The Breton far
It is said that the origin of Far Breton dates back to the 18th century. At the beginning, it was a porridge that was cooked in a bag and served salted with meat. The recipe then evolved to become the essential Breton far of today.
Try the ones from the café Le Ster Laïta in Clohars-Carnoët near Le Pouldu, apparently it's a delight!
Near Erdeven, try the one at La Galettière, a real treat...
The kig-ha-farz
Previously considered as the "poor man's recipe", kig ha farz is a typical recipe often called "the Breton pot au feu". Its particularity comes from the farz, a kind of filling made of wheat or buckwheat flour cooked in the broth. This typical dish is ideal for convivial moments!
During your stay in Le Pouldu, try the one at the crêperie La Charrette in Saint-Evarzec (about 45min drive). In addition to being very good, you will appreciate the original and authentic decoration of the restaurant.
In Morbihan, head for Lorient, a 30-minute drive from Erdeven, to enjoy a good Kig Ha Farz in a special atmosphere at Tavarn Ar Roue Morvan. This dish is only available one day of the week - just ask at the restaurant!
Salted butter caramel
A confection made from caramelised sugar, salted butter and fresh cream, salted butter caramel needs no introduction! To be enjoyed as a small sweet, a lollipop (why not a Niniche?), on delicious pancakes or in a kouign-amann, it will tickle your taste buds ;)
You will find it everywhere in Brittany! You can find them in crêperies or at Maison Biscuits Caramels in Plouhinec, close to our establishment in Audierne. You can also find them in bakeries and in all shops selling Breton products.
Near Naéco Erdeven, stock up at La Trinitaine in the village.
The chouchen
Finally, to accompany all these Breton dishes, what could be better than a local drink, the chouchen! Made from the fermentation of a mixture of water and honey, chouchen is an alcoholic drink varying between 12% and 15%. It is the perfect accompaniment to your desserts.
You can find them in cider or delicatessen stores in the vicinity of our establishments. For example, in Locoal-Mendon at the Cidrerie du Pays d'Auray, just a few minutes' drive from Naéco Erdeven.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of some Breton specialities, but there are many others... such as andouille de Guéméné, cotriade, Breton cider and also various seafood such as oysters or mussels!
