Crossed by the river aven, this small town of ancient charm owes its fame to the school of painters. The village of Pont-Aven is known as "The City of Painters" for a reason. Since 1860, generations of artists from various backgrounds have been seduced by the singularity and charm of these streets. This pretty city of character is also very famous for its "galettes", the famous "galettes de Pont-Aven" that you will have the opportunity to taste between two art galleries.
To help you organise your visit to Pont-Aven, we have put together a short day's programme:
First of all, you will be able to park along the Port of Pont-Aven, these parking lots are paying from June 15th to September 15th but free the rest of the year.
Then walk along the port where the river Aven flows, on your way you will discover the Pont-Aven bridge to which the town owes its name.
Then you will arrive at the village where it is pleasant to stroll from gallery to gallery. If you are feeling peckish, don't hesitate to try some Breton pancakes. The best known are those of the Traou Mad biscuit factory.
Along your walk, you can admire several mills, the bust of Paul Gauguin as well as the pretty facades of the houses decorated with hydrangeas. Make a stopover at the Xavier Grall walk, a gentle moment where you can stroll along the banks of the Aven. A flowery and shady place that will allow you to reach the Bois d'Amour.
The Bois d'Amour is a mythical place that has inspired many painters such as Paul Sérusier and his famous "Talisman", a manifesto of the Nabi movement. Along the river, you will again come across some of the 14 mills that inhabit the town as well as some very beautiful trees. For those who wish, there is also the possibility of a 13 km walk in the Amur Woods.
In the heart of this wood, discover the Chapelle de Trémalo. A small historical chapel in Gothic style, known throughout the world because it houses the polychrome wooden Christ which inspired Gauguin for the "Yellow Christ".
Finally, turn around and finish this walk by going to the other side of the riverbank, which is just as charming. You can stop at the Pont Aven Museum, where a permanent collection is dedicated to the history of the artistic life of Pont-Aven.
Multimedia devices, suitable for all, allow you to understand the artistic effervescence that animated Pont-Aven at the end of the 19th century, thanks to artists such as Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard, Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis.
