What is Plogging?

Combining sport and preservation of the planet is possible!

Plogging? A running practice that consists in collecting the waste encountered on its course.

Why that word?

First of all, it is important to remember that the idea of collecting waste by running (or walking) is not new, many citizens have been mobilizing for decades to save the planet. But the concept of plogging itself, with the media coverage and mobilization that follows, is relatively recent. This trend comes straight from Sweden. In order to work for the preservation of the planet, citizens have launched plogging, a neologism derived from the contraction of the words plocka upp ("to collect", in Swedish) and "jogging". Thus, during his run, the "plogger" collects all the garbage that comes his way.

What is the sporting interest?

It is real! The motto of plogging, "having a healthy body in a healthy environment", speaks for itself. Plogging requires all the muscles of the body. You have to bend down, get up and carry the collected waste at the same time, so you can work your abs, buttocks and biceps! The changes of rhythm impose more physical efforts than a running circuit without constraints. This practice also has a preventive interest: the outside view raises awareness and sensitizes passers-by to the problem of pollution and plastic waste.

Plogging at Naéco Hostels

In 2016, 310 million tons of plastic waste were generated, a third of which evaporated into thin air. France alone generated 4.5 million of this waste in the same year. It has therefore become a major challenge for the country to reduce, recycle but also reuse. At Naéco Hostels, we do our best to promote sustainable tourism through our Naéco#Responsable charter. We invite you during your stay, to collect the various waste that you can find during your outings, but also to throw and sort yours in the containers accessible at the entrance of our sites. Our team is particularly touched by this phenomenon and we hope that plogging will become more and more widespread in our community.
