backpack for a trek in Brittany

What to put in your backpack for a trek in Brittany?

To prepare a hike, it is important to be equipped. Here is a list of essentials not to forget!

Brittany is a region rich in landscapes and walks, its GR34 hiking trail runs along its entire coastline for 2000km. It allows you to visit Brittany on foot, starting from Mont Saint-Michel in the Manche and ending in Saint-Nazaire in Loire-Atlantique.

Our establishments Naéco AudierneNaéco Le Pouldu et Naéco Erdeven in South Brittany are located on the GR34 and at the start of many hikes in South Brittany. Discover our favourite walks in our Naéco roadbooks.

Like any self-respecting backpacker, you need to be equipped and organised!

First of all, before starting to prepare your bag, think of looking at the weather forecast in order to be able to take things accordingly.

Then, the two most important elements for a good hike in Brittany are :

1) a good pair of shoes
2) a good backpack

You will find below a list of the equipment to take with you depending on the duration of your hike in Brittany ;)

A hammock, which allows you to lie down and rest after several hours of walking

For a multi-day hike in Brittany

Finally, for a multi-day hike in Brittany, opt for a 40-50L backpack.

A multi-day hike is not prepared in the same way as a short day hike... Indeed, walking for several kilometres cannot be improvised.

To make your micro-adventure in Brittany a success, you need to add a number of items to your bag!

  • A fleece
  • A microfiber towel
  • Two short-sleeved T-shirts and a tank top
  • A pair of leggings,
  • A pair of walking shorts,
  • Flip-flops to rest your feet after walking
  • Lightweight walking trousers
  • Comfortable underwear + socks
  • A toiletry kit reduced to the essentials: Marseille soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, a small moisturiser
  • A charger
  • Walking sticks
  • A map + a compass

To enrich this micro adventure in South Brittany, you can practice bivouac.

If you want to bivouac in Brittany, add :

  • A very light tent
  • A 10° sleeping bag (for a spring/summer hike)
  • A small mattress
  • A night blindfold, to be able to sleep in daylight
  • An external battery
  • A multi-purpose "canteen" with cutlery, cup, etc.
  • A stove
  • Seeds, cereal bars, dried fruit, etc.
  • A survival blanket
  • Toilet paper (to be collected afterwards)
  • Food (freeze-dried meals, muesli, Chinese noodles, soup, etc.)
  • Water purification tablets
  • Lighter or matches

Optional

  • Binoculars
  • Earplugs
  • A whistle: to signal your presence in case of trouble
  • A hat and a neckerchief: in the evening, it can be refreshing...
  • A camera
  • A notebook and a pencil
  • A book

With all these elements, you are now ready for a hike on the GR34, the customs path!
