The island of Groix was formed more than four hundred million years ago by the coming together of two tectonic plates. Also called the island of garnets or the pebble of Brittany, we are far from imagining that etymologically, the island could have meant "the island of witches". The history of the island of Groix is due to a series of beliefs, religions, maritime and agricultural activities and the 2nd World War.
Groix is a Breton island located in the Bay of Biscay. It is accessible by boat from Lorient, Port-Louis and the Port of Doëlan; It takes about 45 minutes to cross. Groix is a small island 8 km long and 3 km wide with a wilder side to the west and a friendlier side to the east with its beaches and its main port, Port Tudy.
Visit the superb Sables Rouges beach, which owes its name to the garnet that gives it its red colour. It is rather easy to access, sheltered from the wind, it will be ideal for a peaceful afternoon.
Also discover the famous Grands-Sables beach, a large white sand beach, it is the only convex beach in all of Europe, its shape is different from other beaches. It has the shape of a tongue that juts out into the sea. In season, many boats drop anchor at the foot of this pretty paradise beach or in the coves present all around the island.

The island of Groix is a real paradise for walks, you can count two hours of walking to follow the coastal paths between Port Tudy and the Pen Men lighthouse. However, by bicycle you can cover longer distances.
