A surfer's paradise, the Pointe de la Torche is a natural peninsula at the south-eastern end of Audierne Bay in the commune of Plomeur in the Bigouden region of Finistère.
Now an internationally known surfing spot, the Pointe de la Torche is a natural peninsula in the heart of the Bigouden region. Classified as a protected natural site since 1965, it is also part of the classified natural site of the Bay of Audierne since 1989.
Only 9 kilometres away, this advance in the ocean causes a strong swell and very powerful currents which sometimes make the sea very dangerous around the Pointe de la Torche.
When the swell from the open sea rises, enters the Bay of Audierne and hits the Torche, the place becomes a very good surf spot. The spot regularly hosts professional surfing competitions, such as a stage in the WSL Junior World Cup.
As you walk along the point, you can see a burial mound dating from the Neolithic period. This mound on top of the granite promontory has two cairns on top of each other. The upper cairn contains two megalithic monuments including a Middle Neolithic dolmen where human bones were found dated between 4500 and 4090 BC. We also found on this site, a pile of shells (which has now almost disappeared) dating from the Mesolithic period left by the men and women of the time who fed mainly on shells.
If you are not a fan of board sports, you can go for a walk along the Bay of Audierne, observe the megalithic sites, watch the surfers at sea, relax on the beach of Pors Carn or why not go for a horse ride.
In spring, come and admire the many tulips grown here. Finally, in the summer, you may be lucky enough to observe a nesting colony of European bee-eaters, the only one in Brittany.
The Pointe de la Torche Finistère will amaze you with its wild beauty and will offer you a total change of scenery.
